Aghios Ioannis is the sort of place you only find by accident. And that’s what makes it special. A traditional village of staggered stone cottages and endless olive groves, it’s a pretty alternative to busy Corfu Town nearby. In fact, you can forget busy anything in Aghios Ioannis. The pace of life here is just right for that holiday feeling. Wander into the village square and idle away the hours with a strong, sweet coffee – just the way the locals like it. Or amble around the handful of shops where you’ll be able to pick up pretty lace embroidery and handmade jewellery. When the sun begins to fade, make your way to one of the little tavernas and indulge in a local dish of ‘stifado’ - a meaty, red wine stew with onions and tomatoes. Add a bottle of fruity, white ‘Terras de Demo’ and you’ve got an idea of what evenings are all about. Aghios Ioannis is right in the centre of the island so you’ve also got easy access to the whole of Corfu. Wherever you want to go, you’ll never be too far away. Hire a car, grab a map and set off on an island adventure. Track down the Achilleion Palace – originally built for Empress Elizabeth of Austria, and in 1981 used as the casino for the James Bond film, ‘For Your Eyes Only’. Or head up to Mount Pantokrator in the northeast. Closer to home though, there’s the popular waterpark, ‘Aqualand’. Within striking distance from Aghios Ioannis, this fun-packed frenzy of waterslides will keep kids of all ages occupied for hours.
